San Francisco—February 15, 2011—Terracotta, provider of some of the most widely used software for application scale and performance, today announced Ehcache Search, further extending the value of the de facto cache for enterprise Java. Ehcache now offers a powerful native search capability for both standalone and distributed cache users, enabling high performance search of in-memory data while simultaneously offloading queries from overloaded databases. Used in conjunction with Terracotta’s popular BigMemory product, Ehcache Search enables a high performance, low-cost way to query, search and analyze terabytes of data.
The addition of search enables Ehcache users to unify their architecture to meet both transactional and real-time analysis requirements, resulting in significantly lower costs and providing an ideal alternative to deploying multiple solutions to meet their Big Data needs. Other data stores like those popularized by the NoSQL movement, lack the maturity, enterprise class features and proven track record to match Ehcache’s fast and reliable in-memory data management. With Ehcache, development costs for real-time query and analysis are also significantly lower than alternatives due to the use of the same native object level APIs that are already present in the transactional application.
"By leveraging in-memory data stores to support both transactional and analytical applications, enterprises can conceive applications that were unimaginable beforehand," said Massimo Pezzini, vice-president and Gartner Fellow at Gartner, Inc. "By combining the analytical and transactional dimensions in the same application, users can analyze business trends ‘as things happen,’ thus improving their insights and responsiveness."
One early user of Ehcache Search had previously used an in-memory cache to support their transactional application, which they augmented with traditional database queries for search and analysis. With ever-increasing data volumes, this led to slow performance, duplicated infrastructure and high deployment costs. It also suffered from development complexity due to working with two different API sets and architectures. By moving to Ehcache Search, they were able to use a large shared in-memory cache to service all data needs, simplify their code base, and at the same time offload their database and thus reduce IT operational and capital costs.
"Ehcache users continue to be charged by their companies with building innovative new IT architectures for managing the terabytes of transactional data from their Java applications without spending a fortune on database licenses. Ehcache Search is a powerful new capability to support this mission," said Amit Pandey, CEO of Terracotta. "By combining Ehcache’s fast, flexible access to in-memory data with BigMemory’s effortless large memory footprint for hundreds of thousands of Java applications, we are defining a new approach for companies to gain insights into their transactional data to make business-winning decisions."
Ehcache Search is built into the core Ehcache API and is available for immediate download at www.terracotta.org.
Terracotta, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Software AG (Frankfurt TecDAX: SOW), develops breakthrough software that delivers snap-in performance, scale and availability for enterprise applications. A recognized innovator of in-memory technologies, Terracotta's products include BigMemory, which bypasses Java garbage collection to enable in-memory stores of over 1 terabyte; Ehcache, the de facto standard for enterprise Java and default caching solution for many popular applications, containers and frameworks; and Quartz, a leading job scheduler. With more than 500,000 deployments, including the majority of the Fortune 2000, Terracotta is behind some of the most widely-used software for application scalability, availability and performance.
